Thano Heritage Walk

Starting Point: Forest Rest House, Thano

Starting time: 0800 hrs

Ends at: Forest Rest House, Thano

Walking Time: 3 hours

Driving Time from Dehradun: 1 hour

Thano is densely forested with Sal and before the highways were built, remained the pass through which marauders and traders from the plains of North India, entered the Valley. After driving on the forested road from Dehra Dun, we arrive at the quaint Forest Rest House at Thano.

From here, we begin our walk to the ancient Bala Sundari Temple. This is an ancient site dotted with several Nag Sthans or spaces where Naga deities were worshipped. Walking amidst green areas, we come to a narrow pass called the Haathi Raasta or elephant path. We can reach another old temple amidst the fields and the ruins around indicate that the region was once a significant space.

We return to our vehicles to drive up to the base of Thano Top. At the base of Thano Top, we begin a gradual climb up to see the marks of the oldest Forest Bungalow in the northern region, the space affording panoramic aerial views of Rajaji National Park, Jolly Grant Airport and the valley below.
