About Guided Birdwatching


Birdwatching trails will be conducted on 9th, 10th and 11th March 2018 as part of the 5th Uttarakhand Spring Bird Festival in Thano Reserved Forest and Jhilmil Jheel Conservation Reserve. Experienced bird watchers and bird guides from all across Uttarakhand will conduct guided birdwatching. There are no charges for birdwatching; however, you will need to register yourself for the birdwatching trails. All the trails will begin at 0700 hrs and 1430 hrs for the general public and at 0900 hrs for schools and institutions. Thano Reserved Forest is located 24 km from Dehradun and 12 km from Jolly Grant Airport. Set amidst marvelous Sal forest, surrounded by scrub, agricultural fields, crisscrossed by numerous jungle trails, Thano is a haven for birdwatchers and nature lovers.

Jhilmil Jheel Conservation Reserve is located 20 km from Haridwar, on the banks of the River Ganga. Apart from a wonderful site for wetland birds, it is the only location in Uttarakhand where the Barasingha can be seen.

Birdwatching timing for general public: 0700-1000 hrs and 1430-1730 hrs, daily.

Trail no 1: Thano FRH to Ranikhet Gaon trail (~6 km, to & fro)

A medium difficulty trail that takes you uphill towards Ranikhet Village. A good trail for forest birds.

Trail no 2: Thano FRH to Sriyon gaon trail (6 km, to & fro)

An easy trail that winds its way along villages and into sal forest. A good trail for forest and scrub birds.

Trail no 3: Thano FRH-Midhewala trail (6 km, to & fro)

An easy trail that winds its way along villages and into sal forest. A good trail for forest and scrub birds.

Guided birdwatching at Jhilmil Jheel Conservation Reserve

Trail no 4: Jhilmil Jheel FRH to Jhilmil Jheel trail, 6 km (to & fro)

This trail takes you through forest and plantations to the Jhilmil Jheel, where wetland birds and Barasingha can be seen.  A good trail for forest birds.

Birdwatching timing: 0800-1200 hrs on 10th and 11th March 2018

A bus with a capacity of 25 people will depart from Thano for Jhilmil Jheel at 0630 hrs from the Thano FRH.

Trail no 5: Ganga trail (6 km, to & fro)

This trail takes you along the banks of the Ganga, through fallow land and finally through forest. A good trail for riverine species as well as larks, waders, etc.

Birdwatching timing: 0900-1200 hrs on 10th and 11th March 2018

A bus with a capacity of 25 people will depart from Thano for Jhilmil Jheel at 0730 hrs am from the Thano FRH.

Onsite registration: All participants should report for onsite registration 15 minutes before the start of their birding trail.

USBF5 is a PLASTIC FREE EVENT! While drinking water will be available on the festival grounds, there will be no sale of bottled water onsite. Please bring your own water bottles, if you would like to carry drinking water on the birdwatching trails or at the festival grounds.
